The Ruskin Foundation through the Ruskin Library at Lancaster University cares for the largest collection of holograph diaries and notebooks formerly belonging to John Ruskin, including the majority of those specifically related to preparatory work for The Stones of Venice. The provenance of the manuscript material at Lancaster is clearly established. Following Ruskin’s death in 1900, it remained at Brantwood until the Sotheby’s sale of 24th July 1930, when it was purchased by J. Howard Whitehouse for his collection and held at Bembridge School on the Isle of Wight. The collection was transferred to Lancaster University in 1994.
The items in the collection specifically relating to this edition are: Transcript 7A, Transcript 7B, Notebook M, Notebook N, House Book 1, House Book 2, Gothic Book, St M Book, Bit Book, Palace Book and Door Book. There is also the boxed collection (RL 1636) and individually mounted sheets and parts of sheets mounted in albums. For an interesting account of the growth of the collection see Dearden (1994).
Outside the Lancaster collection the items of importance to the project are Notebook M2 belonging to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, USA and Verona Book held at the Ruskin Museum, Coniston, Cumbria.
