M2 is presented within this edition by permission of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University, P.O. Box 208240, New Haven, CT 06520-8240, USA (see also here).
Full vellum approximately 9 x 7 1/2 (23 x 19.2 cm) secured with a brass clasp; labelled in ink ‘M2’ on the spine and ‘2’ on the front cover. The notebook contains 232 pages with notes and drawings written chiefly on the rectos with an index which lists subject matter and references not only in the manuscript itself but also to the smaller field notebooks (Bit Book, Gothic Book, etc). Purchased in 1930 from Goodspeed’s Bookshop in Boston. That firm had acquired the manuscript at the Sotheby auction of 24th July 1930, using B. F. Stevens and Brown of London as bidding agents (Parker (1975)) (Hewison (1978) p.58). The notebook was probably part of Lot 122 Nos 9-13 Historical and Classical Note Books, partly used, 4to and folio. The notebook was thus separated both from ‘M’ which was in Lot 111 Holograph Diaries and Notebooks and Lot 115 Stones of Venice 1849-51, five cloth Slip-Cases containing the original material.
