House Book 2 (RF1996P1618)

The notebook is 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 (19.2 x 12.2 cm). Bound in purple marbled covers. 120 pages. Front boards with label ‘House Book 2’. Recto pages numbered by Ruskin 2 - 60 on greenish lined paper. It has been speculated that House Book 2 was started in late December 1849 (Hewison (1978)). A precise dating is difficult. It seems likely that House Book 2 was started in December or early January as House Book 1 was probably full by Mid to Late December. House Book 2 continues from House Book 1 beginning at House No 50 - the last House being House No 89. Ruskin is able to name only three houses - the rest being indicated by descriptions such as ‘In Calle’, ‘adjoining no 76’, ‘in foscari canal’ etc. (Hewison (1978) p.59) Sold at Sothebys 24th July 1930 Lot 115 No 2. Purchased by J. H. Whitehouse (see Woolford (1972) pp.193-246).
