The scope of the present edition

The present edition has been expanded beyond the original scope of this edition in terms of materials it includes. The reason for this is because the team increasingly saw the need to provide all the manuscript materials generated by Ruskin as far as this was possible. Therefore instead of presenting selected facsimile pages (and transcriptions) of the notebooks at Lancaster, (which were directly referred to from the pages of Notebook M) all are now given within the edition as high-quality digital images. This comprises facsimile images of all pages of Notebook M along with Notebook N, House Book 1, House Book 2, Door Book, Bit Book, Gothic Book, Palace Book, St M Book and Verona Book. This approach also applies to the presenting of all 90+ sheets (or parts of sheets) within the collection, and where possible information on other sheets not available at Lancaster. These are given with transcriptions and related textual information and hypertext links. In addition the full transcript and manuscript of Notebook M2 is provided.

Typewritten transcripts were made of notebooks ‘M’ and ‘M2’ (Transcript 7A and Transcript 7B) in the early years of the 20th century in preparation for the publication of The Works of John Ruskin: Library Edition. These have both been re-typed to form the basis of the transcripts in the electronic edition. Unfortunately, these original transcripts from Ruskin’s manuscripts have a large number of typographical and other errors and they were not faithful to the lineation. However, in the interests of comprehensiveness we include these early transcriptions along with our own.
