Medieval English Theatre


Constitution adopted 2016.


Medieval English Theatre is a scholarly society whose purpose is:
a) to promote interest in and study of early theatre both within and beyond the academic community
b) to take responsibility for the publication of a learned journal entitled Medieval English Theatre, including its funding, editorial content, publication and dissemination
c)  to organise an annual conference open to all with an interest in the field.


1.  The Management Committee of the Medieval English Theatre society will comprise:
a. the Executive and General Editors of the Medieval English Theatre journal (currently 3 in number)
b. the Treasurer
c. the Secretary
d. the Conference Secretary
e. the hosts of the meeting for the previous and the following year (co-opted annually)
f.  a representative of the Social Media group
g. two further representatives of the membership


2. The Editorial Board of the journal Medieval English Theatre will act as an Advisory Board to the Society, and will (if desired) receive copies of the Minutes and of the Accounts.


3. A Business Meeting will be held annually at the Medieval English Theatre conference at which accounts will be presented, and the objectives for the next twelve months discussed and agreed.


4. The Chair of the Management Committee will be chosen from the Committee members and elected every three years at the Business Meeting.


5. The office holders and other Members of the Management Committee will be elected from the Society’s membership every three years at the Business Meeting. Where possible this should not be in the same year as the election of the Chair. Current members may stand for re-election at that time.


6. Membership of the Medieval English Theatre society is restricted to individuals. Members will pay a subscription, the amount to be decided annually for the following year by the Management Committee. There will be two levels of subscription for membership of the Society, an ordinary subscription, and a reduced rate for postgraduates.

   Members will receive:
 • advance information about the annual meeting and any other activities
 • a preferential rate for conference attendance
 • voting rights at the Society Business Meeting
 • access, via the secretary, to the membership circulation list for appropriate purposes
 • a preferential rate for the journal.


7. Institutional subscription to the journal Medieval English Theatre does not confer individual membership or the rights relating to it.


8. All who attend the annual conference have the right to attend and speak at the Business Meeting, but voting at the Business Meeting is restricted to paid-up members of the society who are present.


9. A summary of the Society’s accounts will be presented by the Treasurer at the annual meeting. Detailed accounts will be presented to the Management Committee, and are available on request to paid-up members.

Codicil 1.10.2015:

a)  a contract has been entered into with Boydell and Brewer with regard to the METh journal. The journal will continue to be edited and prepared by the Editors and the Editorial Board of the Society, but it will be published and distributed by Boydell and Brewer.
