Workshop MaterialsThe Literacies for Learning in FE DVD:The DVD shows how course tutors researched their students' everyday literacy practices and the role of reading and writing on their courses. It then shows how they used this research to make small changes in their practice, related to literacies for learning.
Activities and additional resources for use in professional development workshopsdevised by Candice Satchwell.There are three workshop activities to accompany the DVD. Here is an overview for teacher educators. The materials needed for each of the activities can be downloaded directly through the links below. We recommend that teacher educators familiarise themselves with the activities by reading the overview before attempting to use these materials.
Activity 1: The clock activity Materials available for this are: Powerpoint slide with instructions for Activity 1 for student teachers Powerpoint showing examples of clocks A clock template which can be downloaded and copied for participants to complete Powerpoint slide with extension questions related to the clock activity
Activity 2: Relating one student's home literacy practices to the demands of her FE college course Materials available for this are: Powerpoint slide with a case study of Jemma Handout with instructions for Activity 2 for student teachers Suggestions for further work and five additional case study examples. A cube template which can be downloaded and copied to accompany the work on the five additional examples.
Activity 3: Ways of helping students with reading and writing on their courses Materials available for this are: Powerpoint slide with instructions for Activity 3 for student teachers. Handout with instructions and a chart to be completed by student teachers. A copy of the above chart completed for the clock activity. Instructions for use and an annotated copy of the framework used in the DVD. Description of two more examples of changes in practice
