Torcello. It will begin with a forty-minute boat ride to the island of
Torcello, providing an excellent opportunity to relax and meet with other
delegates. We will then walk a short distance (about 8 minutes) to the
Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta (known as the ‘Cathedral'), founded
in 639 A.D. and praised by Ruskin for its 'peculiar luminousness' and
its promise of safety and hope to settlers who fled there to escape invaders.
For Ruskin, the building is 'consistent with all that Christian architecture
ought to express in every age'. Emma Sdegno, a Venetian and one of the
conference organisers, will give a brief introduction to the 'Cathedral'
after which delegates will be free to indulge in a private viewing. We
will When booking your place at the dinner, please specify on the form whether you would like the Fish or the Vegetarian option.
