Lancaster University recommends all cyclists secure their bike with a D-lock, even in secure cycle stores, and register with the BikeRegister.
The BikeRegister is the UK's national, police-approved, bicycle marking registration system where a visible tamper-resistant label deters bike thieves. If a theft does occur, every police force in the UK uses the BikeRegister database to search for stolen and recovered bikes, which can hugely improve the chance of recovery.
Cyclists should also consider insuring expensive bicycles and acknowledge all signage in cycle storage areas.
