Wind Turbine Community Benefit Fund open for submissions

Lancaster University is once again inviting applications for its Wind Turbine Community Benefit Fund, a unique initiative aimed at supporting local community and environmental projects. The fund, which originated with the installation of the university's wind turbine in 2012, has been a significant contributor to the Lancaster District, providing up to £20,000 annually to not-for-profit organisations, charities, trusts, community groups, and voluntary organisations.
The wind turbine, which generates around 15% of the university's overall energy demand, has not only contributed to the University’s sustainability efforts but also enabled the university to give back to the local community. Over the past decade, the fund has supported more than 75 projects, investing over £200,000 in local environmental and community initiatives.
Applications for the next round of funding are now open until Sunday, 29 June 2025. Eligible organisations within the Lancaster District are encouraged to apply for grants to support sustainable projects, whether large or small. Previous recipients of the fund have undertaken a variety of impactful projects, from installing new charging points for electric vehicles to refurbishing community buildings and improving local gardens.
One notable project funded by the Community Benefit Fund was the Fairfield Playground project, which awarded £1,500 to The Fairfield Association in Lancaster. This contribution helped replace worn-out play equipment on the playground with accessible play equipment and a new safety floor surface, making a nicer space for local families.
Organisations or community projects interested in applying for the fund can find more details and application guidelines on the website. The University encourages all eligible groups to take advantage of this opportunity to make a positive difference in the Lancaster District.
