Lancaster University's Wind Turbine Community Benefit Fund is a beacon of hope for local projects striving to make a meaningful impact. Established 10 years ago with the foundation of the University wind turbine, the fund supports initiatives that foster community growth and sustainability. Each year, the fund allocates up to £20,000 to Lancaster District-based not-for-profit organisations, charities, trusts, community groups or voluntary organisations and has created numerous success stories across the area.

One such inspiring project is the Winchester Field and Nature Area in the Scotforth area of Lancaster. They were awarded funding from the Community Benefit Fund to improve accessibility, improve the biodiversity of the Winchester Fields public open space, and raise awareness and understanding of the site’s benefits with visitors. In 2024, they used the funding to install a new footbridge in the nature area, install a signboard providing information on local events and activities, and plant native shrubs and spring bulbs.

By creating a useable footbridge in the nature area, the project allows the local community to walk through this small, wooded nature area year-round, without having to wade through the bog and beck. This is reducing disturbance to plants and other wildlife in the boggy area whilst improving local access to – and appreciation of – our local wildlife.

Sarah Punshon, from the Friends of Winchester Field and Nature Area, said, “We’re so grateful for your initial support, it made a real difference. Since successfully completing this initial project, we have pulled together two large funding bids, both successful, and next year work will begin on a project to further improve paths and playground facilities.”

As the Friends of Winchester Field and Nature Area looks to the future with ambitious plans for further updates to the area, it stands as a showcase of what can be achieved when universities and communities collaborate for the greater good. Lancaster University remains committed to empowering more projects like this, encouraging other organisations to apply for the fund and make a lasting difference.
