Your Design facilities

You'll be working in dedicated creative spaces and will have access to equipment and resources to enhance your practice and make the most out of your studies.

Workshops

You'll have access to Design, Art and Theatre workshops. The Art workshop is equipped with an oscillating belt sander, morso mitre guillotine, pillar drill, band saws, air compressor, radial arm saw, and computer programmable kiln.

Studio Access

Embracing studio culture is a huge part of your development as an independent artist. At Lancaster, you'll have 24-hour access to your own studio space from day one so you can act on inspiration whenever it hits. Your individual studio and access to installation space puts you right in the centre of the creative community at the Lancaster Institute of Creative Arts. Surrounded by your peers you'll quickly form relationships, share ideas and learn to work together.

Event Spaces

You will be able to book and use lots of different rooms on campus for study but the Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Arts houses a number of flexible event spaces to support performance practice, film screenings, discussion and group work, and a black box installation room.

Nuffield Theatre

The Nuffield Theatre is Lancaster's only 'black box' studio theatre. **Insert copy about how students can use the nuffield**

The Peter Scott Gallery

The Peter Scott Gallery houses the University's international art collection including Japanese and Chinese art, ceramics room, antiquities, works by twentieth-century British artists and prints by significant European artists such as Dürer, Miró, Ernst and Vasarely and others as part of changing exhibitions.

Other equipment you can access

As part of the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts, you'll have access to other equipment to support your practice. Most resources are available to LICA staff and students through our online booking system.

Additional Equipment Costs

Study at university inevitably include some extra costs for example print costs and art materials. However costs on first year studio practice module are kept as low as possible and basic materials for compulsory workshops are provided. In studio practice the general expectation is that students will use their resources thoughtfully in relation to appropriate materials, rather than simply spend high or always buy the cheapest.

All books and journals are held by the library and students are encouraged to order new publications to enhance our collection of art books. Technicians are on hand to assist students in selecting and using equipment described above.

Becky Gosling-Fine Art

You might as well call LICA my second home! As a painter, I use studio space for large-scale paintings and with the on-campus art shop offering discounted materials, I feel like I rarely leave! I like to record my work, especially when experimenting with installation for the exhibition, by borrowing the department’s cameras. I use the computer suite for editing and on-campus printing service to help build my portfolio. It really helps with the saleability of my art and to improve my practice generally.
