A course you can make your own

This is a degree that you can tailor to suit your passions and interests.

  • In Year 1, you will get a grounding in the core disciplines of biomechanics, physiology, psychology and sports and exercise medicine alongside topics such as nutrition, digital technologies and data analysis.
  • In Year 2, you can begin to tailor your course to suit your interests and career aspirations by choosing to focus more closely on either sports and performance or health and exercise. Both routes will see you gain the skills to capture and analyse psychological, physiological and biomechanical data to better understand human performance and activity at all levels.
  • In Year 3, you will undertake a research project on a topic of your choice to make a unique contribution to sports and exercise science research. You will also have the opportunity to explore in greater depth the themes in exercise and health or sports that most interest you.

You will graduate equipped with a professional profile ready to embark on a successful career or further study.

Taught by Lancaster Medical School

Our Sports and Exercise Science BSc is one of only a few courses of its kind delivered within a medical school. This means:

  • You will learn in a highly-respected and academically rigorous environment
  • It’s taught by research and industry experts within Lancaster Medical School and alongside a range of specialists such as Bioscientists, Clinicians, Sports Nutritionists and Public Health Professionals
  • You will benefit from the Medical School’s excellent connections with clinicians, practitioners and professionals working in both the health and sports sectors
  • You’ll learn to use clinical processes and equipment, such as blood tests and analysis, electrocardiogram (ECG) readers, glucose and lactate analysis machines and cortex gas analysers
  • You’ll use the Medical School’s state-of-the-art teaching technologies such as anatomage tables

A hands-on course using elite technology

You will get practical experience from the start of your studies with us.

Our world-class facilities are located across our £25m sports centre, new Health Innovation Campus building and life sciences laboratories.

From gym to lab, you will learn to use advanced equipment, tests and techniques to maximise performance and improve health outcomes.

You will gain the skills to capture and analyse physiological and biomechanical data and explore psychological interventions to maximise performance and improve health outcomes.

In addition to practical sessions, you will learn through lectures, seminars, presentations, case studies, exams and coursework.

Careers

A degree in Sports and Exercise Science can open up a wide range of careers in the health sector and sports industry, including:

  • Exercise Physiologist
  • Biomechanist
  • Performance Analyst
  • Physiotherapist (with further training)
  • Strength and Conditioning Coach (with further training)

You may also pursue further postgraduate study here at Lancaster Medical School or embark on a research career.

Enhancing our curriculum

We continually review and enhance our curriculum to ensure we are delivering the best possible learning experience, and to make sure that the subject knowledge and transferable skills you develop will prepare you for your future.

We will publish more detailed information about the structure of this degree course for 2026-entry in June 2025, ahead of our summer undergraduate open days. This will include overviews of the core modules you will take and examples of optional modules which may be available to you.
