Why English Language and Linguistics?

Language is a universal feature of human minds and societies and while English remains the most widely spoken language in the world many other languages are to be found which display considerable diversity.

Gain insight into the nature of language

Understanding principles of language, including its properties, development, variation and use, and how these issues relate specifically to English provides key insights into the nature of language and its role in shaping our social and cultural identities, our institutions and our creative ideas. Our combined programme offers the perfect mix of arts and science in one captivating degree.

As part of this fascinating degree, you will learn about the sounds and structures of English as well as the sounds and structures of English and of the world’s languages. Our extensive catalogue of optional modules gives you the chance to look at the way language is learned, how it evolved, and how it influences the way we think. You’ll also be able to explore the way English is used across a range of different contexts, including advertising, media, literature and the law or how technologies that produce or process language work.

English Language and Linguistics is not just a fascinating area of study, you will gain a skillset that opens doors to a range of exciting and rewarding careers. Transferrable skills include a capacity for critical thinking, an ability to gather, organise and analyse large quantities of data, and an aptitude for developing new and innovative ideas. You will have the chance to develop specialist skills including in the lexical and grammatical analysis of English, computer programming for language technologies, and crafting language for creative industries.

Linguistics and English Language graduates in the future workforce

Our increasingly digital world means that there are work opportunities in developing chatbots, improving the quality of AI-generated voices, analysing online harms and developing social media policy. With a grounding in the fundamentals of language, you could be a part of these innovations.

Career-focused modules

Through all our modules you will develop key analytical skills that will enable you to excel in a variety of careers. You will also have the opportunity to take some of our more career-focused modules. For example, our Schools-Volunteering Module gives you the chance to spend time in a local school gaining first-hand experience of teaching. You can pursue other career aspirations through our Placement Module in which you spend time working in a sector or area of your choice.

Internships

Each year, we invite current students to apply for a research internship. These are paid opportunities in which our students work closely with academic members of staff on active research projects. Students gain advanced research skills that are valuable in a variety of employment settings. Recently, our students have worked as interns on the following projects:

  • Accent variation in historic north Lancashire
  • Discourses around vaccinations during the Covid-19 pandemic
  • Analysing AI-Generated Speech
  • The role of creativity and working memory in second language writing performance

A Level AAB

Course structure

Lancaster University offers a range of programmes, some of which follow a structured study programme, and some which offer the chance for you to devise a more flexible programme to complement your main specialism.

Our annual tuition fee is set for a 12-month session, starting in the October of your year of study.

We set our fees on an annual basis and the 2025/26 home undergraduate entry fees have not yet been set.
