Below is a rough guide to some average monthly living costs (excluding tuition fees) for a single student in pounds sterling. The exact amount you need to live on will depend on your individual needs and prices at the time. The 2024 Save the Student Money Survey showed that, on average, a student might spend £1,104 per month (including accommodation).
In addition to the costs below, there may be initial "start-up" costs that vary according to what you can bring with you, or there may be unforeseen costs. If you are an international student and require a student visa to study in the UK, you must also comply with the minimum funding necessary for this.

Studying at a UK University means you must pay an annual tuition fee. This fee covers the costs of teaching, examinations and assessment. Eligible UK students can apply for a tuition fee loan from the government.
Our Student Money Advice Service is designed to help students manage money, build confidence in budgeting, and understand banking terminology. We can offer information, and in the case of an emergency, we have discretionary hardship funds available.
