  • Benefit from the management expertise of our colleagues in Lancaster University’s Management School (LUMS)

  • Get hands-on experience tackling real-world engineering project management challenges

In the rapidly-developing world of engineering, it is becoming increasingly important that our engineers are equipped to address the challenges of planning, managing, and executing projects effectively to ensure the needs of their clients are met to the highest of standards. Our MSc in Engineering Project Management will equip you with the skills necessary to navigate the world of project management, giving you the opportunity – through industry collaborations – to get hands-on experience working within the field.

Our general engineering ethos and broad range of modules mean that your learning is inherently interdisciplinary. Although you are specialising in engineering project management, you will benefit from working with other engineers which is often a requirement of working in industry and greatly enhances your attractiveness to future employers.

Who is this programme for?

This programme is designed for engineers and individuals with a technical background who want to develop expertise in project management within an engineering context. We accept recent graduates from engineering or other technical undergraduate courses, but we also welcome applicants from less traditional backgrounds with a wealth of experience in the engineering field.

Looking ahead to employability

The Engineering Project Management MSc aims to make you as employable as possible, with a real emphasis on collaborating with our industrial partners through a variety of industry-focussed modules. This course is delivered collaboratively with Lancaster University’s Management School (LUMS), drawing upon their expertise in management to ensure that you have a firm grasp of the theoretical frameworks that will enable you to excel within your future career.

You will also:

  • Develop your portfolio of project management skills through practice, tackling real-world engineering challenges both in the classroom and beyond.
  • Enhance your ability to engage with key engineering stakeholders through a short group project with a multidisciplinary team for an industry client.
  • Undertake a major dissertation project in collaboration with industrial or commercial partners, allowing you to apply your project management skills within an industrial environment.

What to expect

Our programme offers a comprehensive learning experience, providing you with both the theoretical groundworks and practical experience to embark on a career within engineering project management. Our series of core modules cover the fundamentals of business and project management, ensuring that you have a more general understanding of management as a whole, as well as taking a deep dive into the nuance of engineering-specific project management through a series of industrial-based lectures.

In addition to covering the underpinning theoretical aspects of project management, you will also have the opportunity to undertake a short, three-week group project with peers from other engineering disciplines to address a real-world engineering challenge posed by one of our local industrial partners. This module gives you the vital insights into how engineers work in practice, and will provide you with invaluable experience into the interdisciplinary nature of industrial settings.

The course culminates in a substantial dissertation project, which you will embark on either alongside one of our industrial or commercial partners, or otherwise with one of our world-leading academics. This is an opportunity to not only apply your learning in context and make a contribution to the field, but to also gain the demonstrable experience of the practical expertise employers are seeking.
