I have a joint appointment as Professor of English
Linguistics at the University of
Amsterdam, and Professor of Cognition in the Department of
Psychology at Lancaster
University. I am also a member of the ESRC International Centre for Language and Communicative Development, and a Research Associate at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics.
My Lab Group conducts research on language evolution and change,
language acquisition, and effects of early language experience
on literacy development. We combine experimental and
computational approaches to investigate language.
Please get in touch if you're interested in working or studying in our group.
I currently teach courses in World English, Language and Cognition, and Psycholinguistics.
Research: Computational
I am interested in using computational models to reveal the structure in the environment to which the brain responds.
Research: Literacy development
I am interested in how very early language experience affects how we learn to read. We use computational models of learning to read to determine how oral skills affect later literacy development and how the process of literacy acquisition can still be observed in adult language processing.
Research: Language
Most of my research concentrates on language processing - how we learn words and grammar, how we learn to speak and to read, and how languages evolve to promote language learning.
