Lancaster University’s Faculty of Science and Technology has several subjects ranked amongst the best in the UK in the 2017 Complete University Guide (CUG) league tables.

Mechanical Engineering is placed 7th in the UK and has the best graduate prospects rated 98%. General Engineering also features highly in 8th place.

Geography and Environmental Science has climbed three places to 10th in the UK. Professor Phil Barker, Deputy Director of Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) said: “LEC is delighted to be back in the national top ten for Geography and Environmental Science and maintain our position as best in the North West. This league table success is built on an especially strong performance in ‘graduate prospects’ where our work in getting jobs for our students is paying off.”

Mathematics has entered the UK top ten in 10th place. Professor Andrey Lazarev, Head of Department said: “The latest result from CUG confirms our place as one of the top departments in mathematical sciences in the UK, both for teaching and research. I am particularly pleased with our scores on student satisfaction and graduate prospects as they prove the very high added value that the Department brings to its students.'

The Physics Department is also ranked as one of the best in the UK climbing from 12th to 11th place for Physics and Astronomy. Roger Jones, Head of Department said: “This improvement reflects our commitment to engaging teaching, a rewarding student experience and excellent career prospects.”

The Faculty is top in the North West for Mechanical Engineering, General Engineering, Geography and Environmental Science, Mathematics, and Psychology.

Overall, Lancaster University is ranked ninth for the second year in a row.

Professor Peter Atkinson, Dean of the Faculty said: “This is an excellent result for the Faculty of Science and Technology. The top 10 performance of the University, and the increases in performance amongst many Science and Technology departments are a reflection of the significant investments that the University continues to make in its students and of the successful student outcomes, such as graduate employment. I am delighted to see that Engineering has achieved 7th place, and that Geography and Environmental Science, and Mathematics have entered the top 10.

The table is based on ten measures: student satisfaction, research quality, research intensity, entry standards, student: staff ratio, spending on academic services, spending on student facilities, good honours degrees achieved, graduate prospects and completion.

The Faculty is committed to delivering a first-class student experience underpinned by world-leading research. Over £45 million is being invested in state-of-the-art facilities that have a positive impact on student satisfaction as well as enriching the learning experience, and this is reflected in the excellent scores obtained in the Complete University Guide league tables.
