Lancaster University is committed to the development of research talent.

Lancaster's Institutional Strategic Plan for 2021-2026 has a primary goal ‘to consolidate Lancaster University’s status as a leading global research-intensive university.’ This strategy maintains a significant focus on research, the researcher community and research culture, underpinned by the institutional values:

  • We respect each other by being open and fair and promoting diversity
  • We build strong communities by working effectively together in a supportive way
  • We create positive change by being ambitious in our learning, expertise and action

This ambition is supported through being a signatory to the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. Our Code of Practice for Lancaster’s researchers, researcher managers and for the Institution puts the principles within the Concordat in a Lancaster context.

The Concordat Annual Report 2023-24 details our latest progress against the Concordat Action Plan 2023-2026 (see below).

The HR Excellence in Research badge

In recognition of our original Concordat Implementation Plan, the European Commission awarded us the HR Excellence in Research badge in 2011.

This award reflects our commitment to fair and transparent recruitment and appraisal and outstanding career development support for our research staff.

The HR Excellence in Research award requires us to undertake an internal assessment process every two years in order to successfully retain our badge.

Below are links to the submission that we made in 2023, including our current action plan.
