Cyril Smith’s honorary degree to be revoked
The honorary degree awarded to Sir Cyril Smith MBE DL in 1993 by Lancaster University has been posthumously revoked by the University’s Senate and Council.
Members of the University’s investigating committee indicated that they had reached a unanimous recommendation following examination of a range of evidence, including public inquiries relating to allegations of child sexual abuse that were not available at the time the award was made.
The evidence of his serious misconduct does not align with the University’s expectations of professionalism, integrity and accountability.
