Dr Birgit Smith is Head of the Department of Languages and Cultures at Lancaster University. Her teaching focuses mainly on German language and culture, and she is the Year Abroad Tutor for German.

The Erasmus programme, which is the EU flagship for educational exchange in higher education, celebrated its 25th anniversary last year and currently 33 countries participate in the scheme.
