The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is ranked 6th in the UK in the latest Guardian subject league tables, having climbed six places.

With the Times and Sunday Times placing the department 9th in the UK and the recently published Complete University Guide placing it in 10th, the department is now ranked in the top ten by all three university league tables.

Professor Andrey Lazarev, Head of Department said: “I am extremely pleased with Lancaster Mathematics having placed 6th in the 2017 Guardian League Table; this is a significant improvement over the corresponding result last year and confirms our place firmly within the top ten mathematics departments in the UK. This result reflects the dedication of the departmental academic and support staff working together to deliver the best quality teaching to our students.”

Overall, Lancaster University is ranked 8th, up from 10th last year.

The Guardian league table places a strong emphasis on student satisfaction, drawing heavily on the results of the annual National Student Survey, with other factors including staff-student ratio, money spent on students and graduate employment results. 89% of our students were satisfied with their course and the quality of teaching and 90% of graduating students go on to further study or graduate-level jobs within six months.

With a strong community of academics, support staff and students from around the world, the Department welcomes around 250 new students each year into a dynamic and challenging learning environment. The Department is committed to developing students’ full potential by listening to their motivations and receiving feedback, and this is reflected in the excellent scores obtained in the league tables.
