Congratulations to Jared White who has been awarded the Dean's Award for PhD Excellence in the Faculty of Science and Technology for the 1st Year category.

Jared White started his PhD in Mathematics at Lancaster in 2014, having previously obtained an MMath from the University of Cambridge with distinction in his final year. His PhD, supported by an EPSRC-funded scholarship, is supervised by Professor H. G. Dales and Dr N. J. Laustsen.

Currently, Jared is studying Banach algebras arising in operator theory and harmonic analysis. One source of motivation here is a conjecture posed in a recent paper of H. G. Dales and W. Zelazko (Studia Mathematica, 2012). Jared has verified the conjecture for a natural class of Banach algebras associated with locally compact groups: he presented this work at the main international conference on Abstract Harmonic Analysis, held in 2015 at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
