Life at Lancaster: A New Year and Fresh Experiences

Students studying in the library

As the holiday lights faded and we stepped into a new year, returning to Lancaster felt like coming home. Reflecting on the Christmas and winter holidays, I stayed in Lancaster, and it was a truly unique experience. While the city was quieter, it transformed into a winter wonderland, with twinkling lights decorating the streets and a magical Christmas market in Dalton Square. It was the perfect setting to slow down, sip on some hot chocolate, and take in the festive atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the holiday season was celebrating New Year’s Eve at the Graduate College Social Hub. It was a cosy and lively evening, filled with board games, a chance to mingle and chat with fellow students, and a countdown to welcome 2025 together. The sense of community made being away from home during the holidays feel less daunting and much more joyful.

To start the new year on a creative note, I attended a Cacti Painting event on 7th January. It was such a fun and relaxing activity! The room was filled with vibrant colours, laughter, and conversations as everyone explored their artistic side. I walked away with a hand-painted cactus pot that now brightens up my desk—a lovely keepsake of the experience.

Fast forward to this week, our Lent term classes have officially begun (13th January 2025). With new subjects, new learnings, and fresh opportunities for knowledge, the excitement in the air is palpable. I’m already looking forward to diving into the new modules and exploring how they build upon the foundations we laid in the first term.

Reflecting on the past term, I’ve particularly enjoyed attending guest lectures and engaging with industry professionals who bring real-world insights to our classroom discussions. These sessions not only add depth to our learning but also motivate me to think critically about how to apply these concepts in practice.

On the extracurricular side, I’ve loved exploring the peaceful Woodland Trail on campus for quiet walks and moments of reflection. The campus environment is truly special, offering both vibrant social opportunities and serene spaces to recharge. The natural beauty of Lancaster continues to inspire me, whether it’s the picturesque sunsets on campus or the calm of Williamson Park.

Looking ahead, the campus is abuzz with preparations for Lunar New Year celebrations, promising more opportunities to connect with peers and immerse in cultural diversity.

For prospective students wondering what life at Lancaster is like, I’d say it’s a perfect blend of academic rigour and enriching experiences. Whether it’s studying in the peaceful postgraduate library, trying out creative events like cacti painting, or joining friends for a quick meal on campus, there’s always something to look forward to.
