Lancaster University has been ranked 37th in the world for Geography, and is in the top 100 for Environmental Science, according to the latest QS World University Rankings
More than 3,500 universities were considered in the rankings and 891 evaluated. Rankings are based on six factors including: how universities are viewed by other academics and employers; the staff-student ratio; and the influence and impact of a university’s research.
Global surveys were carried out with academics (76,800 responses) and employers (44, 200 response). Academics were asked to identify the institutions doing the best work within their own field and employers were asked which universities produce the best graduates.
Lancaster University overall rose 39 places this year, up to 121 in the world. This consolidates the University’s successful year in the rankings, where it has reached the UK Top 10 in The Guardian Univesity Guide and the Complete University Guide, and 11th in the UK in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.
Social sciences at Lancaster, which includes human geography, also made the World Top 100 in the Times Higher World Subject Rankings, reaching number 84 in the world. It was one of only 17 UK universities to make the Top 100. The rankings measure teaching, research and influence, international outlook and industry income.
Students also rank the Lancaster Environment Centre highly for the quality of its teaching. In the 2015 National Student Survey97% of Physical Geography and Environmental Science students said they were satisfied with their course. Biology and Related Sciences was also highly rated with 95% overall satisfaction.
