Alhaji Ibrahim Sankoh grew up in Freetown and gained a masters in Environmental Chemistry at the University of Sierra Leone. He spent ten years teaching before starting his PhD at the Lancaster Environment Centre, researching the impact of chemical pollutants in his home country.
