                                                                      This entire archivolt fig 4 forms a pure pointed arch of
                                                                      which the outer curve is nevertheless very blunt, and at
                                                                      Finials	the ape[o]x of this arch is set a single figure, a mere wall
                                                                      decoration but of rich Romanesque fancy: the beginning of
                                                                      finials, when it is consider d that the pilaster is severe-
                                                                      ly fluted and that several of the          shafts are
                                                                      fluted thus                   the combination of classical
                                                                      dentil with Gothic form is complete, actually looking here
                                                                      and there like some renaissance barbarism, certainly as
                                                                      unlike a Norman aisle as well could be.
                                                                      The small arcade outside at the top of the north side i[f]s
                                                                      quite invaluable in twisted and zig zag pillars;  like
                                                                                Ferrara But its principal feature is the insertion under
                                                                      its small round arches, of the Byzantine hand blessing;
                                                                      of cups;  pa[¾]tence patinae, and other objects not intelli-
                                                                      gible as occupant ornaments in the blank wall space;
