It is usually easiest to see attitudinal and ideological viewpoints when
they are markedly different from ours. One version of this contrast is
the distinction between what we see as reality and some alternate 'construction'
of reality. Estate Agents are notorious for producing descriptions of
properties which emphasise the advantages and play down the disadvantages
of the properties they are trying to sell.
Write
a spoof Estate Agent's description for the following house to appear in
a local newspaper and consider what changes you have made. You can then
compare it with our attempt and commentary :
A minute two-up, two-down abandoned farm labourer's
hovel, half an hour's walk from the nearest bus stop and with a minute
kitchen built on at the back and a roof that leaks.
