We are back at Light Up Lancaster for 2019!
Now in its 7th year, Light Up Lancaster is a magical, after-dark trail with interactive exhibits and activities from many partners around the Lancaster area. This year again, Lancaster University is sponsoring the festival, and fielding a team of committed and enthusiastic staff to present a wide range of exhibits at Lancaster Central Library.

Lancaster University Family Zone at the Library
Our staff and students will create an interactive family zone, so come and explore the breath-taking Aurora, immerse yourselves in planetary sounds and sights, learn about our atmosphere, discover just how important seabirds are, and get to grips with coral reefs through Minecraft. We can’t wait for you to join us as we go… into the skies!
Join us at Lancaster Central Library on Friday 1st November from 5.30pm to 10pm and Saturday 2nd November from 5.30pm to 7.30pm for exciting interactive workshops:
- The Aurora Room
One of the most well-known space phenomena at Earth is the Aurora. The Space & Planetary Physics team from Lancaster University present an immersive experience showing the sights and sounds of the aurora as if you were in the sky itself.
- Ring Life
What would it be like to live in a planetary ring, like those around Saturn? Put on virtual reality goggles, and experience what it would be like to be an individual ring particle, flying around the ring and interacting with the swarm around you.
- Global Atmospheric Transport of Air Pollution
We hear about poor air quality in urban areas all the time, but air quality isn’t just a local problem in big cities! Discover how air polluants move around the globe through the atmosphere and how they affect the health, ecosystem, and climate of other regions than the one they originate from.
- Remote Sensing Sonification: Jupiter Aurora
Where physics meets art! Thanks to a sonification software, digital images can be converted into sounds. We invite you not only to admire Jupiter’s aurora phenomenon but also to listen to it through a film that is out of this world.
- Coral Reefs and Minecraft
Explore coral reef ecosystems in Minecraft and artistic demonstrations, and learn how seagulls help to keep them healthy. From birds in the sky to rats on islands – learn about the things that threaten the existence of this wonderful ecosystem, and what could help save it.
- Light up the Earth – Reflecting on our Planet
We all know the Blue Marble, an iconic photograph of the Earth taken by the crew of Apollo 17 in 1972. Take our quiz and learn how fascinating photographs from space such as this one can be useful for the natural sciences to the arts and humanities and social sciences.

Spot your reflection in sparkly craters, be mesmerised by modules on the rocket, ride the travelator!
