Dr Mark MacDonald, will share some recent successes that he and colleagues have had in Mathematics and Statistics with modifying LUMES questions, boosting response rates, getting engagement with academic staff, and (arguably) improving our NSS scores. These surveys are not without challenges, since Lancaster has a history of using LUMES to evaluate staff (i.e. promotions), so, many colleagues are understandably nervous about making changes which may negatively impact on such evaluations. Mark will argue that we should not let that stop us from trying to get the most out of these surveys to improve our teaching. He’ll also cover some good practice examples from elsewhere in the university, where other departments have also took some ownership of their LUMES questions.
