As part of the Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorations for 2025 Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines will give a talk “The Last Train to Tomorrow” followed by questions and answers. The event will also include a short talk by Jenna Mornas, Lancaster University on “Letters from Drancy”

On Monday 3 February, 2025, 14:30 – 16:00, the History department & Regional Heritage Centre will host Holocaust survivor Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines. She will give the talk “The Last Train to Tomorrow” at the Management School, Lecture Theatre 17. Her talk is part of the Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorations, since this week, on 27 January, it is 80 years ago that the Auschwitz Concentration Camp was liberated.

Lady Milena was one of the children who in 1939 escaped Czechoslovakia on the famous Children’s Transports. These transports, which were organised by Sir Nicholas Winton, saved the lives of 669 children. Lady Milena will discuss her family history, her journey from Czechoslovakia to England, and her connection to Sir Nicholas Winton. Afterwards there will be a Q & A, where the audience has the opportunity to ask questions.

Most Jewish people were not as fortunate as Lady Milena. Before her talk, we will hear the story of Jenna Mornas, whose family perished in Auschwitz. While awaiting deportation, they wrote touching letters to their loved ones, and Jenna will share these with us.

Please join us in honouring the memory of Holocaust victims, six million Jews, and countless members of other minorities persecuted by the Nazis and their supporters.

The event is FREE to attend and there is no need to register.
