Programme of activities

On day two, drop into The Storey in Lancaster and meet our incredible researchers. Get hands-on with mind-blowing experiments, exciting discoveries, and activities all designed to spark your curiosity! Just turn up and get involved.

The only activity that requires booking is our family-friendly film screening. Join us at The Gregson at 2pm for a free showing of the animated classic Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Seats are limited, so please reserve yours here. https://www.trybooking.com/uk/ELPO.

Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds

From body painting to creating life-size organ drawings, medical imaging, and chair yoga - you’ll discover what it really means to be healthy in body and mind. The activity invites you to explore exciting demonstrations and playful activities designed using clinical expertise and research. Plus, collect stamps in your 'Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds' passport as you go!

The Great Cholesterol and Artery Challenge

Thanks to British Heart Foundation funding, have a hands-on adventure exploring cholesterol and how it affects your body! Have a go with the interactive artery model, where you’ll race to see how blood flows through healthy and blocked arteries. Take on the blood vessels challenge – can you guide the blood cell through the tricky arteries and win a prize? Along the way, discover what makes cholesterol ‘good’ and ‘bad’, and learn how it affects your blood flow.

Whisk Away Pollution! How to Keep the Air in Your Kitchen Clean and Healthy

Fry, bake, steam, boil - did you know that cooking fumes can affect your health? Learn about kitchen air pollution and how to keep the air in your home safe and clean. Discover simple tips to protect your family while cooking, and get creative by painting your very own kitchen utensil to take home. Perfect for all ages looking to get creative and improve their kitchen environment!

Teddy Bear Hospital: Fix, Learn and Explore

Got a teddy with a broken leg? A bear with a bellyache? Or a cuddly toy who's feeling under the weather? Bring your furry friends for a check-up and expert care from our Teddy Doctors. Fun, hands-on activities where you can learn what happens at hospitals. Older children and adults can also explore the human anatomy - ever wondered what's inside your ear or how your heart beats? Learn fascinating facts about our bodies and have a go with real medical equipment. Suitable for all curious minds.

Where Are the Doctors? A Game and Exhibition Adventure!

Come and get creative and design a poster to attract more doctors to work in Lancaster and Morecambe. How do doctors decide where to work? Why do some places have loads of doctors while others don't have enough? Join the Mapping Underdoctored Areas Team for a curious exhibition featuring comic strips and interactive activities exploring the big questions behind healthcare access. Perfect for curious minds of all ages.

Guess Who? Dress Up Like a Researcher

From lab coats to raincoats, safety goggles to sunglasses, different researcher jobs need different gear. Try them on, snap a photo and discover how explorers, researchers and scientists dress for their work, whether in a lab, office or out in the wild. Take part in a community drawing about your dream research project, imagine where in the world (or beyond) you'd investigate and what you'd need to wear. Plus, find out about real research opportunities to get involved with. All curious minds welcome.

Physics Fiesta! Super Science Saturday

Dry ice bubbles, liquid nitrogen, superconduction and gravity wells... it can only be our physicists bringing you their Physics Fiesta! Create magical dry ice bubbles and watch them pop and fizz. You can also try out the bubble hoop challenge to make square bubbles and the gravity well, where marbles zoom around just like planets in space! Activities are perfect for all curious minds.

Toy Or Not To Toy?

Think you can spot the difference between real toys and ones that look too good to be true? Just like Is It Cake? on Netflix, we’ve got a challenge for you! Test your detective skills and decide which toys could fool someone into thinking they’re real, which ones are a bit too strange, and which ones are just plain funny. No cake, but there’ll be plenty of chocolate for those clever enough to crack the mystery!

Grab a ball of clay and shape it into your story or a memory of Morecambe Bay - whether it’s playing in the sand, spotting jellyfish, or cycling along the promenade. Add your creation to our ever-growing Bay model and help tell the story of the place, people, and wildlife. Get creative (and a little messy), and make your own piece of Morecambe Bay! Young Marketeers: Design Your Dream Snack!

Calling all young designers and marketers! Digitally create your own design for a snack, from choosing the ingredients to designing it's packaging, setting the price and what people think about it. After you've created your snack masterpiece, you'll earn your very own Young Marketer certificate! Come along to the Marketing Pavillion and learn the ins and outs of marketing, and discover a future snack idea!

Join the journey to discover good consumption. What does good consumption (the things we buy, use and eat) mean to you, society, and the planet? You can make a battery out of coins… no really, you can! Join our chemists for hands-on experiments and discover how battery circuits work. What's the Hype About Hydrogen?

It fuels spaceships and is used to make things we eat and wear, but did you know hydrogen can be made in different ways, and each way is given a special colour name? Join us for a mind-blowing virtual reality (VR) art experience and explore the amazing connection between music, creativity and the human mind! Simply step into the VR Imagination Cave... choose a piece of music... let your imagination run wild... see artificial intelligence transform your creative thoughts into a unique artwork... then view your masterpiece in a virual gallery. Brought to you by Lancaster University's ISS Innovation Hub and the Psychology department. For all curious, cutting-edge minds!

Tinkering with Tech

Do you love tinkering with tech? Learn how to build your own electronic game console and solder a robot light-up pendant. Then, dive into our interactive games RepairLand and EnergyMaster! This activity lets you explore technology while also learning about sustainability issues related to the growing use of artificial intelligence, tech, and smart devices. Perfect for all curious minds aged 7+.

The World on Screen

Join us for a family-friendly afternoon at the cinema with a screening of an animated Japanese classic. This heartfelt tale takes place in a desolate wasteland where community and survival go hand in hand. After the film, stay for an open discussion exploring how films like this reflect the world around us. A perfect opportunity for families to enjoy a movie and dive deeper into its meaning. The film has a PG rating. Tickets are free but booking is required.
