Recently Lancaster University Engineering Department played host to 16 students from 6 local schools for four days. The students spent time with a researcher from the department and carried out their own research projects linked their researcher’s interests. Six different projects were undertaken by the students involved and at the end of the process each group presented what they had found out to the other visiting students. The students also had an opportunity to explore the campus, have 3D models of themselves printed and hear about research work being undertaken by Professor Roger Kemp who has recently been awarded an MBE for his services to Engineering. A good time was had by all and 15 out of 16 students said they are considering studying Engineering at University with 14 students saying that the event had influenced their decision.
Dr Laura Offin, Schools Liaison Officer for the Engineering Department said “The main highlight of this event for me, was being able to encourage enthusiastic school students by giving them an insight into real engineering research and watching some of them blossom in a very different environment to school”.
