The day included tours of our Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Engineering departments, followed by hands-on activities from each of these subjects. In the afternoon, the teachers led subject curriculum discussions which were attended by some of our academic staff.
The inset day formed part of a programme of events, funded by RCUK, designed to inspire the next generation of world leading researchers. In April, South Lakes students visited the Chemistry department to take part in an analytical competition, and in July students took part in a Research Poster Conference.
Andy Hebson, Head of Science at Kirkbie Kendal School said "The links with Lancaster University have been significantly beneficial to Kirkbie Kendal School. Of the 8 students that attended events, all are going on to study STEM based subjects at university and 7 of them are planning on studying chemistry based subjects. After attending the Chemistry spectroscopy event and the research poster event our pupils came back enthused, more focused and driven to succeed in their A-levels."
