How to choose your Lancaster University college

By Ellie Conran, March 2025.

Lancaster University is one of only a few universities in the UK that has colleges that students belong to throughout their time here. Our campus is home to eight undergraduate colleges, and one postgraduate college. When students receive their offer to come to Lancaster, you will be given the opportunity to choose which college you would like to join, irrespective of what course you will be studying. So, how will you choose which college to join? In this blog post, I will tell you everything you need to know about our college system, advice on how to choose your college, and the experience of being part of a college here at Lancaster!

What is a college?

Our colleges are the centre of community here at Lancaster University. Your college is where your first friendships at university will be formed, and who you will graduate with when you finish your degree. Welcome Week (freshers' week) activities are organised by your college, with a range of day-time activities as well as nights out, to help introduce you to life at Lancaster, and welcome reps in each college will help encourage you to get to know your flatmates, and those living around you.

On-campus accommodation is located within each college area, and everyone in your accommodation, whether you live in a house or flat block, will all be part of the same college. Each college has its own amenities (laundry, porters, social spaces etc), and being surrounded by other people in your college adds to the community feel. Even if you live off-campus, you will still be included in college events and activities, for example, this week’s events held by Grizedale College include free Pancakes for pancake day, and a 'paint and sip' event.

On top of being home to our on-campus accommodation, your college is the first place to go to for support, with the College Advisor Teams and 24/7 porters, and the home to your on-campus social spaces. All colleges have their own study spaces, games facilities and each college has its own unique offerings to students, such as kitchens or music practice rooms. I am part of Grizedale College (the best of course!) and, in my opinion, we have the best bar on campus (known for its cocktails). We also have kitchen facilities, which are useful now I live off-campus, allowing me to bring food to heat up in my lunch break.

Choosing your college

When choosing your college, most people tend to consider two main things: type of accommodation and location.

Each college has different options for accommodation, so you'll find something that matches your preferences and budget here.

Some people also consider the location of each college, though this isn’t important to everyone, just consider how far you might be willing to walk to get to your 9am lecture!

Here's a quick summary of each college to help you decide which college is best for you:

Bowland College

Bowland is the college at the very centre of campus, which means you will never have far to walk to grab your morning Greggs or have to leave your bedroom too early for a 9am lecture!

Bowland has a spacious student common room with comfy seating, TV’s, dart boards, table tennis, a pool table, and plenty of board games. Bowland has multiple sports teams, including football, netball, darts, pool, and table tennis, and they have an annual intercollege competition called “Founders” against Lonsdale College.

Cartmel College

Cartmel college is located in south-west campus, so definitely has a reputation for being the furthest college to walk to! Cartmel has its own study space, a soundproofed music room, the cosy Barker's dining room, ‘The Winning Post’ (Cartmel Bar), and a common room filled with all the best bar sports games.

Cartmel competes in various competitions, such as the inter-college quiz, or one of many sporting competitions, such as the Patriots Cup against Furness college.

County College

County College is located in north campus, close by the Woodland Walk and within a short walk of places to eat and study at the centre of campus. County has a range of facilities and social spaces, such as their common room, bar, games room, kitchen, study room, and PC lab.

County has a unique cultural exchange programme where students can be matched with a student from another country to learn more about each other’s culture and traditions!

Furness College

Furness college is centrally located on campus, with the choice of ensuite and shared toilet and shower accommodation.

Furness is a smaller college, but they still have a range of sports teams to join who compete against Cartmel for the ‘Patriots Cup’. Furness has many on-campus facilities, such as a kitchen, JCR common room, and of course the popular college bar, Trevor, that hosts quiz nights and ‘Treveoke’.

Fylde College

Fylde College is another centrally located college on campus. Fylde Bar (The Mill) serves great pub food, cheap fry-ups for breakfast, and is always showing the latest live sport. When England are playing football, The Mill is the place to be!

Fylde college has a great common room, with a selection of games, as well as a fully functioning kitchen, and study rooms.

Lonsdale College

Lonsdale College’s motto is “Simply the best”, and they are a competitive college in terms of sporting competitions and boasting the title of one of the most successful academic colleges.

Lonsdale is located on south-west campus and is comprised entirely of en-suite accommodation. Facilities in this college include a kitchen, study room, computer room, and even their own cinema room!

Pendle College

Pendle College is one of the largest, and most distinctive colleges at Lancaster. It is located further south on campus (but not quite as far as Cartmel and Lonsdale).

Pendle Brew is a cosy vegetarian and vegan café that participates in the Cheap Eats scheme offering a hot meal for just £2.95 every day of the week between 12pm-3pm. The social space also plays host to events like Pendle Live, karaoke night, and pub quiz. Upstairs, you'll find table tennis, pool, and table football. The college also has a dedicated kitchen for students who live off-campus to use and a music room.

Grizedale College

Saving the best undergraduate college till last (not at all biased) Grizedale College! Grizedale's bar is known for its cocktails and mocktails, as well as barbeques which are great for socialising in the summer, kitchen facilities, common room and reading room.

Grizedale is known for its college sport, such as its football club, Grizedale netball teams and bar sports. Each summer, we compete in a range of different sports and activities against Pendle College in our annual ‘Warriors’ tournament.

Graduate College

Graduate College is the college for postgraduate students and staff, located in the south of campus and offering a more relaxed and quieter environment with the support and facilities you need to help concentrate on your work.

The college hosts lots of events that bring the college community together at their social hub.

Final thoughts

No matter which college you choose, being a part of a college at Lancaster is a great experience, which adds to Lancaster’s unique community feel, helping you to feel more at home during your time here. Each college hosts a range of events, and equal wellbeing support, as well as a range of clubs, societies and intercollege competitions, so whichever college you become a part of, there will always be plenty of opportunities to get involved!
