When Chemistry Alumni Met Chemistry Freshers
Graduates representing a range of decades, and staff who taught them, took a trip down memory lane revisiting their old colleges, (which may or may not have moved location around campus!) exploring favourite haunts in the local area and marvelling at the hi-tech equipment in the refurbished chemistry lab.
Professor Peter Fielden, Head of Chemistry, took guests on a guided tour of the laboratory and new facilities, whilst former Lancaster Chemistry Professor, John Ebdon, and alumni Bob Rainford and Dr Tony Whitfield shared recollections of times in the old department. Graduates travelled from as far as Canada and Egypt to be involved in the reunion and three former staff, who have all lived on the same road for over 20 years, drove the relatively short distance from Dolphinholme where their address is affectionately known as 'Chemistry Close'.
Some staff and graduates had not met up for 30 years and many brought along their treasured photos of university life and, in one case, the original exam papers from 1969!
Freshers mingled with graduates who took the opportunity to share their experiences of how to use the subject to pursue a stimulating future career.
Dr Tony Whitfield (Chemistry, 1978 & 1980, Grizedale) commented ‘Chemistry has proved to be a very powerful and useful qualification foundation for my entire career’
