English Talks around the World

'Inspire and get inspired' is one of the slogans used to promote the English Talks event, a series of short talks in English, given by people from around the world for whom English is not the first language, but who use it in order to realise their personal or professional goals and dreams. The event was founded by Daniel Zuchowski, who holds an MA from Lancaster University (Linguistics and English Language Department) and who says it was the inspirational lecturers that he remembers most from his time at Lancaster. He enrolled at Lancaster shortly after he had discovered Corpus Linguistics, which deals with 'real world' text, and when he found out that Lancaster was the centre of Corpus Linguistics in Europe. He was also impressed to learn that his MA supervisor would be Dr Andrew Wilson, the co-author of one of the first complete textbooks on Corpus Linguistics.

Daniel is an English language consultant, trainer and teacher trainer. He has also written a collection of short stories The New Dubliners, published in 2014 by Literary Publishing. His second book will be published in spring 2017. His most recent project through which he shares his passion for the English language, education, life-long learning and cultural diversity is the English Talks event which takes place in a different country every year. In 2016 it will take place in Barcelona on 22 October. There will be speakers from around the world, with professional backgrounds ranging from linguistics, education and psychology to visual arts, sport and entrepreneurship. One of the speakers will be Lancaster's Head of the Linguistics and English Language Department, Prof. Elena Semino.
