Artistic Venture for Local Graduate
"Without completing the BA in Fine Art at Lancaster I would not have been able to set up King Street Studios, with my husband Roy. I found that the course helped to develop my critical thinking skills in order to evaluate my own work, and place it in the wider context of Contemporary Art as a whole. However, after graduating, there didn't seem many opportunities to exhibit locally the type of work I had been able to create on the course.
I also found that, despite being a mature student, I had enjoyed the studio culture on the course, something which has stayed with me as being also of value to professional working artists after graduation. Both these ideas have fed into our business plan, and informed what we hope to offer to other artists and the public now. We aim to bring modern and contemporary art exhibitions to a city centre location in Lancaster, hopefully for the benefit of both aspiring artists and the public in general, and to provide an environment which is friendly and approachable both for those already knowledgeable about art and anyone who is just curious. At King Street Studios we have artist studio spaces and two distinct gallery spaces. There is a rolling programme of exhibitions to showcase local and regional artists. We hope to work with new and emerging artists of all ages, both locally and regionally, and to provide a city centre venue for the public to see and buy modern and contemporary art. We are establishing a range of other small events for the public based around the creative arts, such as artist talks, workshops and classes, in a friendly and approachable environment."
