Graduate Funds PPR Scholarships - David Lewis with Scholarship Students

Lancaster’s Department of Politics, Philosophy & Religion (PPR) was delighted to host a visit by senior alumnus, David Lewis (Politics and International Relations, Lonsdale, 1975) and his wife, the writer, Georgina Harding, in March. It was David’s first trip back to campus since the 1970s.    

David, who has built a successful career in the shipping industry and is currently Chairman of Howe Robinson & Co, recently established a scholarship fund for PPR students at Lancaster. Keen to put something back into the University, he was inspired to support scholarships because of the introduction of full fees for undergraduates from 2012. David regrets that studying is no longer ‘free’, as it was for him.

Despite unseasonably cold temperatures, with the campus looking more like a scene from a Christmas card than the early days of spring, David and Georgina enjoyed a packed programme during their visit, including lunch with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark Smith, and Professor Robert Geyer, Head of PPR.

David and Georgina were given a tour of campus and shown pictures of David’s 1975 graduation ceremony, which evoked warm memories. The highlight of the day was an opportunity to meet the first four recipients of David’s PPR scholarship:

  • Elizabeth Gregory (BA Ethics, Philosophy and Religion, Pendle)
  • Asma Hanslod  (BA Politics and Philosophy, County)
  • Rebeka Kollar (BA Politics with International Relations, Grizedale)
  • Emily Lynn (BA Religious Studies, Bowland)

Rebeka Kollar spoke for all the scholars when she explained that “getting a chance from Lancaster is the best thing that ever happened to me and I work hard to prove that I deserve this place.  I would like to make people’s lives better and I hope that I will develop the necessary skills at Lancaster to allow me to do so. I am very happy and grateful to the PPR Department for choosing me and to David for funding the award and I will try my best to fulfil their expectations.”

At the end of the visit David commented, “I really enjoyed meeting the students. I thought the whistle stop tour was fantastic – lots of impressive new builds – and I thought the graduation pictures were just classic!”
