Nick Hope - Olympic Sports Reporter

After graduating from Lancaster I quoted my experiences writing for SCAN and presenting on Bailrigg FM to help secure a place on a Broadcast Journalism MA course at UCLAN for the following academic year. I worked as a freelance reporter for numerous commercial radio stations in the North West before joining the BBC Watchdog team in London in early 2007. Positions with the One Show, Rogue Traders, CBBC and the News Channel (formerly News 24) followed before attaining my role as an Olympic and Paralympic Sports Reporter with BBC Sport in time for the 2010 Vancouver Games.

Through BBC One’s British Olympic Dreams programme I was able to travel the globe to tell the stories of British athletes such as Jessica Ennis, Ben Ainslie, Sir Chris Hoy, Rebecca Adlington and Tom Daley during their journey to the London Games. Owing to my swimming background (2003-4 Lancaster University Swim Team captain), I spent much of the summer at the Aquatics Centre, but also managed a few reporting cameos in the Olympic stadium, Velodrome and ExCeL Centre where I interviewed GB’s first-ever Olympic taekwondo gold medallist Jade Jones live for BBC One.

The Paralympics were also incredible and in addition to my work for BBC Radio 5 Live and the BBC Sport website I also hosted coverage of the wheelchair basketball in front of 10,000 people at the O2 Arena.

London may be over, but the Games go on and in future months I’ll be reporting for BBC TV, radio and online outlets on a number of winter sports as we gear up to coverage of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
