Tableau accessibility statement

This accessibility statement applies to the viewing of web-based Management Information dashboards which are delivered by Tableau Server ( https://tableauserver.lancs.ac.uk/ ). The dashboards themselves are designed and developed using Tableau Desktop, which is not covered by this accessibility statement.

This website is run by Lancaster University, utilising third-party software provided by Tableau (part of Salesforce). We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader

We also try to make the content as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Some images don’t have alternative text

If you have contacted us about an accessibility problem (e.g. because you needed information in a different format, or you think we're not meeting the requirements of the accessibility regulations) but you feel that this has not been dealt with satisfactorily we want to know.

The first stage would be to raise your concern informally. The aim of this stage is to achieve a quick and easy solution for you. It would be appropriate to take the concern through the relevant contact listed above for reporting an accessibility problem.

But if we do not deal with your concern satisfactorily you can take it through to a formal complaint. See our Concerns, complaints and enforcement information.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Text

Styles and structure
  • Pages missing a “skip to content” link (this doesn’t meet WCAG 2.0 Success Criterion 2.4.1)
  • Tab navigation headings don’t always have sufficient colour contrast. This fails the WCAG contrast ratio criterion (4.5:1)
Navigation
  • People using screen readers are unable to see the layout of the forms used in the dashboards, due to the absence of explicit text labels. This fails the WCAG 2.0 1.3.1 criterion
Headings
  • Dashboard pages missing a clearly defined heading, known as a “H1” (Heading 1) (this doesn’t meet WCAG 2.0 Success Criterion 1.3.1)
  • Dashboard tab headings often don’t contain machine-readable text (this doesn’t meet WCAG 2.0 Success Criterion 1.3.1)

Interactive Tools

Embedded Tableau Visualizations
  • iFrame showing Tableau visualizations doesn’t have a readable title to describe the contents of the frame (this doesn’t meet WCAG 2.0 Criterion 4.1.2)
  • Labels are used incorrectly – there are multiple occurrences where an aria-label attribute is set on a div with no valid role attribute (this doesn’t meet WCAG 2.0 Criterion 4.1.2)
  • Form elements (e.g. radio buttons) on some dashboards (e.g. Student Profile Dashboard) do not include labels. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.0 Criterion 4.1.2.
  • Interactive form elements (e.g. radio buttons) on some dashboards (e.g. Student Profile Dashboard) are nested – this can cause problems with screen readers. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.0 Criterion 4.1.2.
  • Some form elements (e.g. radio buttons, colour keys) on some dashboards (e.g. Student Profile Dashboard) have child elements which fail the “aria-required-children” rule (WCAG 2.1 Criterion 1.3.1).
  • Some interactive components (e.g. the “Replay” icon in the menu bar) are too close to other interactive parts of the page, which could result in the wrong function being selected by mistake. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.2 criterion 2.5.8.

PDFs and other documents

The accessibility regulations don’t require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services, but if you have problems accessing the information you need from any document published on the Lancaster University Tableau Server please get in touch and we will do our best to provide it in an alternative format.

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

What we are doing to improve accessibility

Management Information dashboards will be updated where there are accessibility issues that can be resolved – for example updating the colours used to ensure they meet the colour contrast standards.

Many of the issues listed in this accessibility statement relate to the third party Tableau web platform – we will continue to liaise with the supplier and apply any relevant upgrades.
