Accessibility statement for Panopto

This accessibility statement applies to the Panopto lecture capture system. This statement covers both the student-facing and the staff-facing interfaces. As Panopto is a third party piece of software we have limited control over the changes we can make to it. Panopto provide detailed information about their application and its accessibility along with a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) on their website: detailed Panopto accessibility information.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 200% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader

The service is primarily used to record and host video content which means it is possible that content can be shared or uploaded which isn’t accessible. It is therefore important for us to ensure that helpful guidance and training is available to users who create content to minimise the risk of this.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Form control contrast

Some search boxes do not have sufficent contrast with their surroundings, which may make it difficult for users with visual impairments to use them. (WCAG: 1.4.11)

Link purpose

Some links do not clearly describe their destination, which may make it difficult for users using assistive technologies to understand their purpose. (WCAG: 2.4.4)

Text contrast

The text of some links does not have sufficient contrast with its background, which may make it difficult to for some visually impaired users to read them. (WCAG: 1.4.3)

Missing ARIA description IDs

Some elements on the page have missing labels (or are labelled by elements that don’t exist on the page), which may make it difficult for users of assistive technologies to understand what those elements do. (WCAG: 1.3.1)

Semantic lists

Some lists contain elements that are not coded as list items, which may cause assistive technologies to miscalculate the number of items in the list. (WCAG: 4.1.1)

Table heading scopes

Headings in some tables do not have their scope defined, will make it harder for those using assistive technologies to know what the header refers to. (WCAG: 1.3.1)

Duplicate IDs

A very small number of elements have duplicate IDs which may cause confusion to users of assistive technologies. (WCAG: 4.1.1)

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We will continue to work with the supplier, Panopto, to address the accessibility issues highlighted and deliver a solution or suitable work around. As a Panopto is a third party system we have limited ability to make any changes ourselves.
