1.25 Summary of integration of rational functions

Summary.

To integrate a rational function:

(a) use polynomial long division;

(b) factorize the denominator into powers of linear factors and irreducible quadratics;

(c) split up the factors from the denominator using partial fractions;

(d) integrate powers of any linear factors;

(e) use tangent and quadratic substitutions to integrate any irreducible quadratic factors.
