4. Virtual Libraries—that is, Medieval Libraries Reconstructed on the Web—and Other Projects

• La Bibliothèque virtuelle du Mont Saint-Michel: https://www.unicaen.fr/bvmsm/. Sponsored by the Université de Caen Normandie, the Centre national de la Recherche scientifique and the Ville d’Avranches, this site offers access to facsimiles of all the manuscripts from the Abbaye du Mont Saint-Michel that are housed in the Bibliothèque patrimoniale d’Avranches. The collection comprises 205 medieval and early modern books.
• Clairvaux Virtual Library: https://www.bibliotheque-virtuelle-clairvaux.com. This site will eventually provide access to nearly a thousand manuscripts held in a dozen European libraries—what survives of the library of one of the earliest and most important Cistercian monasteries.
• Digital Libri Sancti Kiliani - die Handschriften der Wurzburger Dombibliothek:http://vb.uni-wuerzburg.de/ub/lskd/index.html. Catalogues and reproduces the 214 manuscripts of the Cathedral at Würzburg that were desposited in the library of the city’s university in 1803.
• Durham Priory Library Recreated: https://www.dur.ac.uk/imems/durhampriory/. A new project that will digitise the 480 manuscript volumes, dating from the seventh century AD onwards, and the several dozen printed books that once belonged to the pre-Reformation Library of Durham Cathedral.
• The Gascon Rolls Project (1317–1468): http://www.gasconrolls.org/.
• Henry III Fine Roll Project: A Window into English History, 1216–1272: http://www.finerollshenry3.org.uk/index.html.
• The Library of Charles V and Family: http://www.europeanaregia.eu/en/historical-collections/library-charles-v-family. ‘Nearly 80% of this prestigious library will be reconstructed by the Europeana Regia project through the digitisation and scientific cataloguing of 76 manuscripts in French libraries, 10 manuscripts in the Royal Library of Belgium and 12 manuscripts in the British Library in London.’
• Virtual Monastic Library of Lorsch: http://www.bibliotheca-laureshamensis-digital.de. Hosted by the library of Heidelberg University, this site aims to ‘virtually reconstruct’ the monastic library of the important monastery at Lorsch in the Rhineland by providing online facsimiles of the 330 manuscripts that have survived—330 codices that are presently found in over 68 libraries across the worldwide.
• Virtuelles Skriptorium St. Matthias: http://stmatthias.uni-trier.de/index.php. A virtual reconstruction of the medieval library of the Abbey of St Matthias in Trier comprising some 526 books..
