My first term as a student in the Department of Management Science
Posted on

Are you curious about what it’s like in the first term at Lancaster University? Let me walk you through this awesome journey. By the way, I study MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
Arrivals week
As this was my first time in the UK, I was a bit worried. I flew from Vietnam to the Manchester airport by myself. At first, I thought I had to book an expensive Uber or go by train to Lancaster with two super heavy suitcases. Then I asked the school and figured out that the school offers a FREE COACH from the Manchester airport to the campus. That was a huge relief!
On the first few days, the school had an eco market, which sold some second-hand frying pans, pots, and everything you need to live in Lancaster (at a really cheap price). Can you imagine a £1 frying pan at a 90% good quality!?!!! This took place in October 2024, and I hope you can enjoy this in October 2025.
First meeting with the Department
I study MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management. What truly excited me was a big-scale meeting of over 100 students (also from MSc Business Analytics). We were then divided into the group to solve a murder puzzle. Professors played different roles and gave out different testimonies. It was so exciting with many twists and turns in the whole morning. Our group got 2nd place, and it was so much fun!!!
The course content
The programme is ranked at 13th in the world. With such a great ranking, you may wonder how the modules actually are.
I can say that I really enjoy it. The programme is a great qualitative programme, and the professors are super nice. I have studied key specialised modules like Strategic Supply Chain Management and Logistics Management. From these two modules, I learnt so many new core concepts like risk management in operations or seven logistics waste types. When I paid serious attention to class, within a month, I figured out my direction for the dissertation in summer 2025!
Besides the specialised, we also learn the general management modules. We have the Project Management module, where we can practice being a project manager. We also have Leadership, People, and Organisation (my favourite one :*). It was so fun exploring different leadership styles and redoing the MBTI personality test. (I’m an ENFJ this year, and MBTI updates are a must!).
Life in Lancaster city
It feels just like I am living in a movie in Lancaster. Think of the beautiful green hills and historic landmarks. The air is fresh, and the town is peaceful. In November, we had the Light Up Lancaster 2024 festival, with a sparkling light concept. It was big, and it was mesmerising.
So, are you excited? Welcome to Lancaster’s lovely community!
