Travel and Accommodation

Conference Venue

All sessions will be in meeting room 2/3 on the ground floor in the Institute for Advanced Studies. You can bring your own laptop or a CD or memory stick for your presentations.

Accommodation

Registration will be on the ground floor in the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS). Keys can be collected in the Conference Centre office, which is very close to the IAS building. If you arrive by car, you can get a parking permit from the Conference Centre office.

Travel to Lancaster

Lancaster is easily accessible by road, rail, air and coach. Travel details, local timetables and area maps can be found on Lancaster University’s travel page.

There are regular bus services (numbers 2, 2A, X2, 3 and 4) every 10 minutes to the university from Lancaster bus station. The journey takes 20-30 minutes depending upon the exact route, which varies from bus to bus.

The bus station is situated on Damside Street.

If you arrive by train you will need to walk to the bus station, which will take 5-10 minutes. If coming from the south, as you leave the station building, turn LEFT and walk up to Meeting House Lane (50 yards). If coming from the north, as you leave the station building, turn RIGHT and walk up to Meeting House Lane (50 yards).

Turn LEFT. You will walk past The Friends Meeting House on your left, just after the station. Walk down the hill for 400 yards to a set of major traffic lights (the King’s Arms Hotel and Waterstone’s are on the corner) and turn LEFT.

Walk along China Street (the main road) and then carry on down the hill.

When you get to the bottom of the hill the bus station is 100 yards further on, on your right. You can cross the road at the pedestrian traffic lights opposite the bus station.

Lancaster

The historic city of Lancaster is a friendly bustling city which has all the amenities of a large city without having lost its charm and character.

There are numerous sites of interest including: Lancaster Castle, Lancaster Priory, Roman Bath House, Music Room, Church of St John the Evangelist, Judges Lodgings, City Museum and Maritime Museum.

One of the most striking features of the area are the spectacular mountains of the Lake District which form an impressive backdrop looking north over Lancaster and Morecambe Bay. Morecambe and the beautiful historical village of Heysham are only 20 minutes away from Lancaster, attractions include: Sunderland Point, The Port of Heysham (with regular sailing to the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland), St Patrick’s Chapel (750 AD), Parish Church of St Peter, and Rock Hewn Graves.
