Ruskin is presumably referring to the Last Judgment painted for the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence, described by Vasari in his life of Angelico ( Vasari, Le Vite, Testo III.272), and now in the San Marco Museum in Florence. Its provenance is discussed in Pope-Hennessy, Fra Angelico, p. 192. There is a detailed description by Ruskin of the picture at Works, 4.275 and there are further passages quoted from his diary at Works, 12.235 and following. Ruskin at Works, 12.235 quotes this small (105cm x 210 cm) panel as evidence that Angelico is better when working on a smaller scale, and in this he agrees with Kugler's account of Angelico in 1842.
Fra Angelico c.1400-55
Last Judgement c.1432-35
Tempera on panel, 105x210cm
Provenance: Commissioned by Pope Paul III; placed on the altar wall of the Sistene Chapel, in the church of Santa Maria dell'Orto
Further Comments: Fra Angelico painted the figures nude, it was a later artist who added some draperies to the figures.
Collection: Museo di San Marco, Florence
