   Centre of Doges palace . next facing sea
   [Novo?] [?] the old verd antique and marble shafts are within the
   balcony; stands, upon the balcony plinth, a red marble belted shaft, which carries the
   innermost row of niches Its belt is a block of white marble. its section fig 1
	The base of this shaft is [?] [?] & flat as seen also in
	   fig 1. and standing on a vile bracket.
	      Its capital is vigorous and far undercut in leafage - but
	         utterly base - hard & vile in execution one lobe at fig 2

								most panel character
								of the last Scala

								the basest ogeed trefoils

				The vault of the niche is a smooth round concave
				with six ribs of the balcony   kind of ridge [diagram]
				traced on it, meeting in a well drawn rose.
				This is  a [?] section of a vaulting rib

a pretty and       [diagram] the pinnacles of these
well imitated				^   niches are otherwise like  la Scala. but
is used beneath			as vile as can be -
this, the only				In supporting the pedestal of the niches above
good part of the whole		brackets are used which remind me of Pal Bernardo
					and I doubt not are of same date.

Observe - the small			[diagram] [diagram]		in with   pedestal
trefoiled arches of					Yes. this above. but below in canopy
the red balcony
have all been inlaid				     [diagram] thus
with grey marble.
now for the most part
      fallen out


+  Note the trefoil of this niche very curious - it is not stilted and
 yet [diagram] - still less [diagram]	but the unnatural & difficult & [not?] of curve
					-    note this as characteristic of
					later work - and associate it
					with ellipse - of balcony -		[diagram]
