[M2.123L] [M2.123] 123 equestrian, whose surroundingfoliationcrocketing is the most luxuriant I have seen except that of the Beato Pacifico; It is put - horse, canopy and all within a huge lozenge or multifoiled figure, composed by a thick trunk of a tree which throws out enormous leaves at intervals inserting the stalks into their centres like some Early English ornaments or early French - the cathedral of Mans, for instance - copied in Sainte chapelle; but the leaves uselessly rich - a middle point between the crocketing of St Marks and the early English - the form of the latter, the feeling of the former. So again I have noticed all the cinque cento work here - formed on Romanesque plans: and in general I have been struck with the remarkable power in composition shown in every style: which is shown by this Veronese workmen; I was disappointed in the Effigy of Can Grande to-day: Can Grande the face is huge featured coarse, and with an unmeaning smile on it - but seem from below, the general placing of the figure is touching beyond description - not a fold - not a line is lost, no one wrong - and this may perhaps seem still more singular, considering that the figure is entirely separate from the couch on which it is placed. it is worked in a separate piece and the whole body forms a kind of arch - from the feet to the shoulder - which bend to the pillow - the latter forming the shortest arm of an ogee curse so that there is from three to four inches of daylight between the
