This is in part a straightforward indication of the location of the shaft. It is also significant in relation to Ruskin’s dates for the building and rebuilding of the Ducal Palace, a matter of concern to Ruskin in M2 as he seeks to define the best period of Venetian architecture. The side facing the Piazzetta (started 1424) is some 80 years later than the side facing the Molo and the Bacino S. Marco.
