‘Mastico’ is a transcription error for ‘Mastino’. See Works, 11.89 for Can Mastino della Scala: he died in 1351; his tomb, one of the Scala Monuments, ‘already shows traces of erring ambition’; in his ‘reign began the decline of his family’.
